Most people sitting the NAATI CCL test are doing it for the five points towards permanent residence, which means the immigration topic is the one they are living through as well as studying. This page works a complete citizenship interview segment by segment — residence and absences, the responsibilities, the pledge — with every model answer in Tamil and transliteration, and then gives you the other sixteen immigration and settlement scenarios on this site, from bridging visa conditions to a section 501 cancellation.

Model answers stay hidden. You’ll hear one segment at a time, interpret it out loud, then either record yourself for an automatic NAATI-style mark or reveal the answer and mark yourself. At the end you get a mark out of 45 against the 29 every dialogue has to clear on its own.

How examiners build a immigration & settlement dialogue
An immigration dialogue is built out of conditions and thresholds: somebody has to meet a requirement, by a date, with a document, or a specific consequence follows. That is why these segments are so dense with numbers, form names and subclass numbers, and it is also why an examiner can mark them so precisely — five years of residence, one trip of three weeks, twenty-eight days to respond, a 510-hour English course, a subclass number that is not interchangeable with the one printed beside it. The second thing being tested is modality. Officers say must, may, is not guaranteed, is only a request, and Tamil gives you a hard form and a soft form of each. Downgrading நீங்க சட்டத்தை கண்டிப்பா கடைப்பிடிக்கணும் into something closer to "you should follow the law" is not a stylistic preference; it tells an applicant that a compulsory obligation is optional, and it is marked as a distortion rather than a slip.
Where marks go on this topic
01Softening a compulsory obligation into advice
Voting in elections and jury duty are compulsory in Australia and unfamiliar as obligations to many applicants, so the officer's "you must" is doing real work. In Tamil the compulsion sits in the verb ending: நிறைவேற்ற வேண்டும் carries it and the softer நிறைவேற்றலாம் does not. The same trap runs the other way when an applicant says they will do something and the interpreter renders it as a possibility. Match the strength of the modal exactly, in both directions.
02Approximating a residence figure
The residence questions exist to be counted. Five years in the country, one trip away, three weeks abroad — each of those is arithmetic the officer performs, and "a few years", "once or twice" or "about a month" changes the answer. Long absences can affect eligibility, so an absence rounded up is not a harmless tidy-up. Write the digits as they arrive and read them back rather than reconstructing the sentence from memory.
03Paraphrasing fixed official wording
The citizenship pledge has three elements — loyalty to Australia and its people, the democratic beliefs the applicant shares, and the rights and laws they will uphold — and the officer is reading something close to a fixed text. Candidates hear a long formal sentence, take its gist and produce two of the three. The same segment hides a second trap: what is being offered is an invitation to a ceremony, arriving in three to six months, not the ceremony itself. Keep both ends of the range and keep the invitation distinct from the event.
04Treating subclass, form and section numbers as noise
Subclass 820 and subclass 801 are two different grants about two years apart, and in Tamil they are said out as எண்ணூற்றி இருபது and எண்ணூற்றி ஒன்று. Form 888, Form 40CH and section 501 work the same way: they are identifiers, not quantities, and swapping a digit points the listener at an entirely different document or power. Say them slowly and completely, and never abbreviate one because the speaker already mentioned it earlier in the dialogue.
05Answering as yourself because you know the system
This is the pitfall specific to immigration. A candidate who has been through a partner visa or a citizenship appointment knows what the officer wants to hear, and under time pressure supplies it — a fact the applicant left out, a correction to a date that sounds wrong, a tidy answer to a question the applicant fumbled. Every one of those is scored as an addition or a distortion. Move what was said, including anything you are certain is mistaken, and let the officer deal with it.
Terms worth drilling before you sit this
- residenceவதிவிடம்vadhividam
குடியிருப்பு is where somebody actually lives, which is not the same as what visa they hold. The follow-up about long absences is part of the same question — keep the two halves joined.
- residence requirementகுடியிருப்பு நிபந்தனைkudiyiruppu nibandhanai
குடியிருப்பு நிபந்தனை is a defined eligibility test with a threshold behind it, not a general remark about living here. Whenever a figure comes attached to it, the figure is the point.
- pledge / oathசத்தியப்பிரமாணம்saththiyappiramaanam
சத்தியப் பிரமாணம். Made later at the ceremony, not in the interview, so "are you willing to make this pledge" is a question about future consent and must not become "do you promise".
- jury dutyஜூரி டியூட்டிjury duty
ஜூரி டியூட்டி stays as a loanword. It is a compulsory duty here and unfamiliar to many applicants, but explaining what a jury is would be stepping out of role.
- to voteவாக்களிப்பதுvaakkalippadhu
வாக்களிப்பது. In Australia voting is an obligation rather than an option, so "you can vote in elections" is a genuine distortion of "you must".
- genuine and continuing relationshipஉண்மையான, தொடர்ந்து நடக்கிற உறவுunmaiyaana, thodarndhu nadakkira uravu
உண்மையான மற்றும் தொடர்ந்து நடக்கும் உறவு is the statutory phrase a partner visa is decided on. "A real relationship" and "a serious relationship" both lose the continuing half, and that is the half being tested.
- sponsorship undertakingஸ்பான்சர்ஷிப் உறுதிமொழிsponsorship uruthimozhi
ஸ்பான்சர்ஷிப் உறுதிமொழி is a signed, enforceable commitment. Rendering it as "promised to help" strips out the enforceability, which was the officer's reason for raising it.
- bridging visaபிரிட்ஜிங் வீசாbridging veesa
பிரிட்ஜிங் விசா as a loanword. Its conditions — work rights, travel, study — are separate facts the client has to act on, so carry each one rather than summarising them as "the rules".
- visa subclassவீசா சப்கிளாஸ்veesa subclass
விசா சப்கிளாஸ் numbers are identifiers, not amounts. 820 and 801 are different visas roughly two years apart; in Tamil they are said as எண்ணூற்றி இருபது and எண்ணூற்றி ஒன்று.
- statutory declarationஸ்டேட்யூட்டரி டிக்ளரேஷன்statutory declaration
ஸ்டேட்யூட்டரி டிக்ளரேஷன் stays in English because it is a specific document signed in front of an authorised witness. "A written statement" loses the witnessing that gives it any weight.
- NAATI-certified translationநாட்டி சான்று கொடுத்த மொழிபெயர்ப்புNAATI saandru kodutha mozhipeyarppu
நாட்டி சான்று கொடுத்த மொழிபெயர்ப்பு is a stamp on a written document. It is not what you are doing in the room, and where a speaker distinguishes translator from interpreter, keep the distinction.

Register in this setting
Immigration offices produce a distinctive pair of registers, and candidates blur them in opposite directions. The officer is procedural and neutral — welcome, then check, then confirm — and candidates routinely warm that into reassurance the officer never offered, particularly at the end of a citizenship appointment where a congratulation is present but a guarantee is not. The applicant speaks with marked deference: ஐயா, நீங்க, honorific verb endings, and often more feeling than an Australian speaker would put into the same room. "This country has given me a great deal" and "I am ready to make this pledge with all my heart" are not padding to be trimmed for time; they are the applicant's own voice and they are marked. Render deference as ordinary politeness rather than servility, keep neutral turns neutral, and never let your own tone imply doubt about what an applicant is telling an officer — in a setting where credibility is being assessed, that is the most damaging thing an interpreter can add.

Welcome. Today is your citizenship appointment. First, I need to check your identity and your residence. How long have you lived in Australia, and have you been away from the country for long periods during that time?

Good. Now I'll ask about the responsibilities of citizenship. As an Australian citizen you must obey the law, vote in elections, and you may be called for jury duty. Do you understand and accept these responsibilities?

Questions about immigration & settlement dialogues
- Is the NAATI CCL test worth points towards permanent residence?
- Yes. Passing the CCL test is worth 5 points towards permanent residence, which is why most candidates are sitting it alongside a visa application rather than for interpreting work. The sitting itself costs AUD $814. The points come from the pass, not from the margin, so there is nothing extra to be won by scoring 85 instead of 63 — but there is also no partial credit for 62.
- What immigration topics can come up in the CCL test?
- Anything a community interpreter meets at an immigration or settlement appointment: partner and family visas, citizenship, bridging visas and work rights, skills assessments, employer sponsorship, protection interviews, the health requirement, document certification and on-arrival settlement services. All of those are on this page as full dialogues, because you do not get to choose which one you are handed on the day.
- I have been through this process myself — does that help me interpret it?
- It helps with the vocabulary and hurts with the discipline. Candidates who know the system fill gaps the speaker left, correct a date that sounds wrong, or answer a question they could answer themselves. Each of those is marked as an addition or a distortion, and they cost more than the omission you were avoiding. Your job is to move what was said, mistakes included.
- How many marks is an immigration dialogue worth?
- 45, the same as any other dialogue, with 90 across the paper and 63 needed to pass. The rule that catches people is the per-dialogue floor of 29 — you can clear 63 overall and still fail because one dialogue came in under it. Immigration segments are dense with numbers, deadlines and obligations, which is exactly the profile of a dialogue that slips below the floor.
- Should I keep English words like bridging visa and jury duty in my Tamil?
- Yes, when that is what Tamil speakers in Australia actually say. பிரிட்ஜிங் விசா, ஜூரி டியூட்டி and ஸ்டேட்யூட்டரி டிக்ளரேஷன் are the community renderings, and inventing a literary Tamil calque makes you less intelligible to the person you are interpreting for rather than more accurate. Naturalness in the community is part of what is being marked.
- How does a citizenship interview differ from a visa interview to interpret?
- A citizenship appointment is largely confirmatory: the officer is checking facts that already exist and explaining obligations, so the pressure sits on numbers and on modal verbs. A visa interview is assessing credibility, so the pressure sits on not improving what you hear. This page works the citizenship dialogue in full; the partner visa interview is worked as one half of a full mock paper elsewhere on the site.
