NAATI CCL Tamil Mock Test 4 — Partner Visa Interview and First Home

This is the paper where a single dropped word costs the most. On one side a Department of Home Affairs case officer is deciding whether a relationship is genuine and continuing; on the other a real estate agent is naming figures a family will carry for thirty years. Sixteen segments, every model answer written out in Tamil with transliteration, marked out of 90 under NAATI's real pass rule. Sit it in exam mode first and read it back with the answers open afterwards.

Model answers stay hidden. You’ll hear one segment at a time, interpret it out loud, then either record yourself for an automatic NAATI-style mark or reveal the answer and mark yourself. At the end you get a real 90-mark result against NAATI's actual pass rule.

Why these two topics appear together

A government interview and a commercial negotiation is a natural shape for a real paper, and these two are put together because they fail candidates for the same underlying reason: the instinct to be useful. In the visa interview the officer is weighing the applicant's own account, so an answer you have tidied, ordered or made more confident is an answer the applicant did not give. In the property dialogue nothing is being weighed, but every second sentence contains a figure, a percentage or a deadline, and "about six hundred thousand" is simply wrong. One dialogue punishes you for adding, the other for approximating, and almost nobody is naturally weak at both.

What the examiner is listening for

Where candidates lose marks on this paper

Each of these is a real line below. Tap through to see it in full.

  1. Dialogue 1 · Case officer · jump to the line

The trap. Reducing உண்மையான மற்றும் தொடர்ச்சியான to "a real relationship", which drops the continuing half — the half the officer is actually required to be satisfied of — and rendering ஸ்பான்சர் as "your husband".

The fix. Keep both terms as terms. The sponsor's identity has not been established at this point, and by the last segment it turns out to be the applicant's wife, so "husband" is an invented fact in the opening thirty seconds of the paper.

  2. Dialogue 1 · Applicant · jump to the line

The trap. Quietly dropping "with the agreement of both our families" because an anxious interpreter senses it might sound like an arranged marriage and weaken the case. That is editing evidence, and it is scored as an omission on a load-bearing fact.

The fix. Render it exactly as said. An introduction made through family is entirely legitimate and the legal test is about commitment and a shared life, not about how a couple met. Keep the timeline too — met 2021, engaged a year later — and remember நிச்சயதார்த்தம் is engagement, not the wedding.

  3. Dialogue 1 · Case officer · jump to the line

The trap. Answering the wedding question and letting the other two go. This 41-word turn carries three separate questions: whether both families know and support the relationship, where the wedding was and who came, and whether photographs or invitation cards exist.

The fix. Hold the whole turn to its full stop before you open your mouth, then put three ticks on your paper — family / wedding / photos — and deliver all three in the order asked. Multi-part officer turns are where this dialogue is won and lost.

  4. Dialogue 1 · Case officer · jump to the line

The trap. Softening "your sponsor has signed an undertaking to support you" into "your sponsor promised to help you". உறுதிமொழி here is a signed, binding commitment; a promise is a courtesy, and the difference is why the officer mentioned it at all.

The fix. Keep the signing and keep the obligation. Then carry all three strands of the plan that follows — living, working and building a life in Australia — instead of compressing them into "your future", which is one item where the officer asked for three.

  5. Dialogue 2 · First-home buyer · jump to the line

The trap. Two six-hundred-thousand-something figures land in consecutive turns — the agent's ஆறு லட்சத்து ஐம்பதாயிரம் asking price and the buyer's ஆறு லட்சத்து இருபதாயிரம் counter-offer — and candidates who did not write the first one down produce the same number twice.

The fix. Write 650 and 620 as digits the moment each is spoken. Going into English, drop the lakh structure entirely: an agent needs "six hundred and fifty thousand" and "six hundred and twenty thousand", and keep "less than the asking price" as the comparison it is.

  6. Dialogue 2 · Real estate agent · jump to the line

The trap. Rendering "five business days" with the bare நாள் and dropping வேலை. Business days are not the same span of calendar time, and this is the exact window in which a buyer can still walk away from a signed contract.

The fix. Say வேலை நாள், keep "in New South Wales" because cooling-off rules differ by state, and keep the forfeit clause at the end. Dropping the forfeit converts a qualified right into an unqualified one, which is a distortion rather than an omission.

  7. Dialogue 2 · Real estate agent · jump to the line

The trap. Arithmetic said out loud. A ten per cent டெபாசிட் on ஆறு லட்சத்து இருபதாயிரம் is அறுபத்திரண்டாயிரம், and candidates who catch the percentage lose the dollar figure, or catch the dollar figure and lose the price it was calculated from.

The fix. All three numbers have to arrive: ten per cent, 620,000, 62,000. Keep ட்ரஸ்ட் அக்கவுன்ட் as well — the deposit being held in the agent's trust account rather than handed to the seller is the whole protection, and "they keep the money" reverses it.

  8. Dialogue 2 · Real estate agent · jump to the line

The trap. Collapsing "two hundred to six hundred dollars" into "a few hundred", and merging கறையான், ஈரப்பதம் and கட்டிடத்துல வெடிப்புகள் into "problems with the house". Three named defects and a price range, all treated as atmosphere.

The fix. Both ends of the range, all three defects by name, and then the timing instruction: have the inspection done inside the கூலிங்-ஆஃப் பீரியட் so you can still withdraw. That final clause is the entire reason the advice was given, and it comes last, when your memory is fullest.

Pacing this paper

Sixteen segments running from 31 to 42 words. The two longest turns are the agent's inspection advice and the officer's three-part wedding question, and both arrive late in their dialogues when concentration is thinnest — expect the wobble there rather than at the start. Note figures as digits and names as single letters; you will not have time to write words and you would not read them back if you did. If a number escapes you, finish the sentence anyway: a complete rendering with one gap scores better than a fluent fragment that stops. Budget about ten minutes a dialogue and never go back.

The full paper, with model answers

Both dialogues in full, each segment with its model answer in Tamil, a transliteration, the key terms and the examiner’s note. Play any line to hear it.

Partner Visa Interview: Proving a Genuine Relationship

An onshore partner visa (subclass 820/801) applicant attends an interview with a Department of Home Affairs case officer in Melbourne. The officer probes how the couple met, their cohabitation and joint finances, the wedding, and their future plans to establish that the relationship is genuine and continuing. The Tamil-speaking applicant brings supporting documents.

Thank you for attending this partner visa interview. I need to be satisfied that your relationship with your sponsor is genuine and continuing. Could you begin by telling me how and when the two of you first met?

💡 Keep the timeline exact (met இரண்டாயிரத்து இருபத்தி ஒண்ணு/2021, engaged one year later). 'With the agreement of both families' reflects the arranged-introduction context common in Tamil marriages; do not omit it.

  3. Segment 3 · Case officer · 40 wordsEnglish → Tamil

I see. For this application I also need evidence that you share your lives. Do you live together, and do you have any joint financial commitments, such as a shared bank account, a lease, or bills in both your names?

💡 The list of evidence types (bank account, lease, bills) must be kept complete. 'Joint financial commitments' is a specific concept (கூட்டு பொருளாதார பொறுப்பு), not just 'money matters'.

💡 The time span 'ஒன்னரை வருஷம்' (one and a half years) is exact and supports cohabitation. Don't drop the mention of having brought the documents — it shows the evidence is ready.

💡 The ceremony is a traditional Tamil Hindu wedding (தாலி கட்டுற சடங்கு) — keep the authentic ritual name rather than a term borrowed from elsewhere; the number of guests (~இருநூறு/two hundred) and the place (சென்னை) are concrete details to preserve. English-side place and ceremony name changed to fit the scene — see _enEdits.

Cultural & register notes

  • — The onshore partner visa is a two-stage grant: temporary subclass 820 first, then permanent subclass 801 about two years later. Keep subclass numbers exact — they are not interchangeable, and in Tamil they are said as எண்ணூற்று இருபது and எண்ணூற்று ஒன்று.
  • — Introductions arranged through family are common and entirely legitimate for Tamil couples; the legal test of a 'genuine relationship' concerns commitment and a shared life, not how the couple was introduced. Never let a hint of doubt creep into the interpretation.
  • — Ceremony names are proper nouns: this couple married with a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony at a temple, so keep the Tamil ritual words — தாலி கட்டுதல், மாங்கல்யம் — rather than flattening everything to just 'wedding'. Tamil Hindu ceremony vocabulary stays as itself rather than being explained away.
  • — 'Genuine and continuing' is the statutory phrase the officer must be satisfied of; render its legal weight faithfully as உண்மையான, தொடர்ச்சியான and do not soften it to merely 'real' (உண்மையான alone) or 'serious'.

Buying a First Home: Making an Offer, the Cooling-Off Period and a Building-and-Pest Inspection

A first-home buyer meets a real estate agent to make an offer on a house and learns about the contract of sale, the cooling-off period, the deposit and why a building-and-pest inspection matters before settlement.

    Model answer

Thank you very much, everything is clear to me now. I'll first confirm the loan approval from the bank, then submit a written offer of six hundred and twenty thousand, and I'll also arrange the inspection.

💡 Buyer restates the 620,000 offer and the three-step order (loan approval, then written offer, then inspection); keep all three steps and the amount.

Cultural & register notes

  • — Australian property terms — 'contract of sale', 'cooling-off period', 'settlement', 'trust account' — are used in English by Tamil speakers too; keep them as loanwords written in Tamil (கூலிங்-ஆஃப், செட்டில்மென்ட், ட்ரஸ்ட் அக்கவுன்ட்) rather than forcing stiff Tamil coinages.
  • — The deposit (டெபாசிட்) paid on exchange is the ten per cent held in the agent's trust account, which is different from the buyer's savings or a home-loan deposit; interpreters must not blur the two.
  • — Cooling-off rules are state-specific (five business days in NSW, none in some states or at auction), and 'business days' (வொர்க்கிங் நாள்) is not the same as calendar days — carry the state and the exact wording.
  • — 'Rising damp' is naturally rendered simply as ஈரப்பதம் (eerapatham, dampness in the walls) in spoken Tamil; the interpreter should know that this everyday word covers the full technical term rather than inventing a calque.
  • — Large dollar amounts are naturally spoken in lakhs by Tamil speakers too: 650,000 = ஆறு லட்சத்து ஐம்பதாயிரம் (aaru latchaththu aimbathaayiram), 620,000 = ஆறு லட்சத்து இருபதாயிரம் (aaru latchaththu irubathaayiram), 62,000 = அறுபத்திரண்டாயிரம் (arubaththirandaayiram) — render the exact figure, never approximate or round.

Questions about this mock test

Are these real partner visa and property questions from the exam?
The situations are real in shape but nothing here is copied from a live paper, because no such material is public. NAATI does not release its test content, so this paper is written to the published specification instead: two dialogues from different topic areas, around 300 words each, delivered in segments of roughly 35 words and marked out of 45 apiece.
Should I make the applicant's answers clearer than they actually were?
No, and this is the most expensive instinct on this paper. A case officer is assessing credibility from the answers themselves, so filling a hesitation, reordering a rambling reply or adding a connective the speaker never used changes the evidence in front of them. Graders mark that as an addition or a distortion, both of which cost more than a plain omission would have.
How do I handle large dollar amounts in the property dialogue?
Tamil speakers in Australia count property money in lakhs, so 620,000 is ஆறு லட்சத்து இருபதாயிரம் and the ten per cent deposit of 62,000 is அறுபத்திரண்டாயிரம். Coming back the other way, leave the lakh structure behind — an English-speaking agent needs "six hundred and twenty thousand", and a candidate who says "six point two lakh" has produced a number the listener cannot act on.
Do I need to understand visa law or property law to pass this paper?
No. You are marked on transfer, not on advice, and nobody expects you to know how a cooling-off period is calculated. You do need the handful of phrases that carry the legal weight — genuine and continuing, undertaking, contract of sale, cooling-off period, exchange of contracts, trust account, settlement — because paraphrasing any one of them changes what the listener does next.
Can I pass if I am strong on the housing half and weak on immigration?
Not reliably. Each dialogue is worth 45 marks and you need at least 29 on both as well as 63 overall, so 40 on the property half and 24 on the visa half comes to 64 and is still a fail. That per-dialogue floor is the reason to sit a paper like this one even when one of its two topics already feels comfortable.
What should I actually write down during these two dialogues?
Digits, and almost nothing else: 2021, 1.5, 200, 48, 5, 10%, 650, 620, 62, 200-600. Every one of those appears in this paper and every one is markable. Candidates who try to hold them in working memory lose at least one, usually the second of a pair, and words take far too long to write while the next clause is still arriving.
