NAATI CCL Tamil Mock Test 3 — a safety induction and an NDIS plan meeting
- 16 segments
- 534 words
- about 20 minutes
- 90 marks · 63 to pass
- free · no account
Two dialogues, sixteen segments, ninety marks — a complete NAATI CCL Tamil mock test, free and worked in full. The first half puts you on a warehouse floor on a new worker's first morning; the second sits you between a mother and an NDIS planner writing her six-year-old son's first plan. Every model answer is given in Tamil with transliteration, so you can mark yourself the moment you stop speaking rather than guessing how you went.

Sit this paper like the real test
Model answers stay hidden. You’ll hear one segment at a time, interpret it out loud, then either record yourself for an automatic NAATI-style mark or reveal the answer and mark yourself. At the end you get a real 90-mark result against NAATI's actual pass rule.

Why these two topics appear together
Workplace safety and disability services look like unrelated corners of the syllabus, and that is precisely why a real paper puts them together: the examiners want two different institutions in one sitting. What the two halves share is a problem for the interpreter. Both are built almost entirely out of Australian systems that have no ready Tamil equivalent — personal protective equipment, the incident report, workers compensation; then the NDIS, Core supports, Capacity Building, plan management, short-term accommodation. Neither dialogue can be carried on general fluency. If you cannot name the thing, you cannot interpret the sentence, and the listener leaves the room unable to act on what they were told.
What the examiner is listening for
- 01System names arriving as names. வொர்க்கர்ஸ் காம்பென்சேஷன், ஃபர்ஸ்ட்-எய்ட் ஆபீசர் and என்.டி.ஐ.எஸ். are written out in Tamil so the listener can repeat them at a counter; "government help" is not an interpretation of any of them.
- 02The two NDIS funding buckets held apart. கோர் சப்போர்ட் is Core supports, கேபாசிட்டி-பில்டிங் is Capacity Building, and they pay for different things. Collapsing both into பணம் is the most expensive single move available on this paper.
- 03Multi-step instructions delivered complete. The lifting rule has four parts — knees bent, back straight, no twisting under load, trolley for anything heavy — and each part is a separate piece of information the worker needs.
- 04Obligations and negations kept at the strength they were spoken: equipment that is அவசியம், an injury that must be reported however small, a sacking that would be சட்டத்துக்கு எதிரானது. Hedging any of the three changes what the law says.
- 05Quantifiers that limit a promise. Workers compensation covers part of the wages, not the wages. Upgrading it to full pay is an addition, and graders treat an invented entitlement more seriously than a lost one.
- 06Worried questions staying questions. The worker asks whether the gear comes out of his pay and whether reporting will cost him his job; the mother asks when the plan starts and whether it can be changed later. Turning any of these into a statement supplies an answer nobody gave.
Where candidates lose marks on this paper
Each of these is a real line below. Tap through to see it in full.
Dialogue 1 · Supervisor · jump to the line
The trap. Compressing steel-capped boots, hi-vis vest and gloves into "safety gear", and letting "they're not optional" land as a recommendation.
The fix. Name all three items separately, then keep the obligation hard — the model reaches for அவசியம். Three items plus one obligation is four things a grader can tick; the tidy summary version scores one.
Dialogue 1 · Supervisor · jump to the line
The trap. Dropping one of the four manual-handling steps, almost always the last one, because the sentence already felt long enough to finish.
The fix. Bend the knees, keep the back straight, never twist while carrying, use the trolley for heavy things. This is a segment to write down as four ticks, not to hold in your head.
Dialogue 1 · Supervisor · jump to the line
The trap. Reversing the order of first aid and paperwork, or downgrading the obligation to "you can report it" when the supervisor said any injury must be reported.
The fix. Keep the sequence he gave — the first-aid officer checks the worker first, then they fill in the சம்பவ அறிக்கை together — and keep "even a small one" attached to the obligation rather than to the apology.
Dialogue 1 · Supervisor · jump to the line
The trap. Turning வொர்க்கர்ஸ் காம்பென்சேஷன் into "the company will pay you", and losing the fact that it covers only part of the wages.
The fix. Carry the scheme name, then the limit: part of your wages and your medical costs. Keep the negation whole as well — it is against the law to sack someone for reporting an injury, not merely unfair or unlikely.
Dialogue 1 · Worker · jump to the line
The trap. Treating the spilt oil near the toilet as small talk tacked onto a thank-you and trimming it to save breath at the end of a long turn.
The fix. That sentence is a hazard report and it is why the segment exists. Keep the location, the spill and the consequence — someone could slip and fall — in the worker's own tentative register.
Dialogue 2 · Planner · jump to the line
The trap. Merging கேபாசிட்டி-பில்டிங் and கோர் சப்போர்ட் into a single pot of funding, and dropping the mother's right to choose her own therapists.
The fix. Name both buckets and say what each is for, then keep "you can choose your own therapists" as an entitlement rather than an offer. Choice and control is the principle the entire meeting rests on.
Dialogue 2 · Planner · jump to the line
The trap. Blurring the plan-management options into "someone else will pay the bills". Agency-managed and plan-managed are different arrangements with different paperwork for this family.
The fix. Give the two options separately — the agency manages the funds, or a plan manager pays providers on her behalf — and keep the promise that her preference for a Tamil-speaking therapist is written into the plan itself.
Dialogue 2 · Planner · jump to the line
The trap. Rendering respite with only the everyday word ஓய்வு and dropping "short-term accommodation", or cutting the opening line of empathy because the funding detail felt more important.
The fix. Give both labels: குறுகிய காலத் தங்கும் ஏற்பாடு is the whole phrase she will actually see printed in her plan. And keep "I understand how exhausting that is" — in a planning meeting, acknowledgement is content, and it is marked.
Pacing this paper
Segments run from 29 to 44 words and the second dialogue is the heavier one, with three or four named things in most of the planner's turns. Abbreviate ruthlessly on the notepad — a single letter for the scheme, C and CB for the two funding types, arrows for who pays whom — and never write Tamil while you are still listening. Budget about ten minutes a dialogue, do not go back, and if a name escapes you, deliver the explanation around it and keep moving instead of stalling on the label.

Safety Induction and an Incident Report
On his first day at a Melbourne warehouse, a Tamil-speaking worker is given a work health and safety induction covering PPE and safe lifting. He then discloses that he strained his back the previous day, and the supervisor explains the incident-reporting process, first aid and workers compensation.

The company provides all PPE free of charge; nothing comes out of your pay. Now, manual handling. When you lift a box, bend your knees, keep your back straight, and never twist while carrying a load. For anything heavy, use the trolley.

I'm sorry to hear that. Any injury, even a small one, must be reported. First, our first-aid officer will check you over. Then we'll fill in an incident report together, recording what happened, when, and how. This protects both you and the company.

Please don't worry. It's against the law to sack you for reporting a workplace injury. If a doctor says you need time off, workers compensation can cover part of your wages and your medical costs. Reporting honestly is the right thing to do.
Model answer

Cultural & register notes
Dialogue 2 · 45 marks
NDIS: First Plan Meeting for a Child with Autism
A Local Area Coordinator meets a mother to build her six-year-old son's first NDIS plan. They discuss his autism and speech goals, funding under Core and Capacity Building, choice of a Tamil-speaking therapist, plan-management options, and respite (short-term accommodation) because he has seizures and does not sleep. The plan can be reviewed as his needs change.

Glossary for this dialogue
Cultural & register notes
- — என்.டி.ஐ.எஸ். funding splits into Core, Capacity Building and Capital categories; these are technical buckets — keep கோர் சப்போர்ட் and கெப்பாசிட்டி பில்டிங் distinct rather than merging them into a vague 'பணம்'.
- — 'Choice and control' (தேர்வும் அதிகாரமும்) is a core NDIS principle; the mother's right to choose her own Tamil-speaking therapist must be conveyed faithfully, not downgraded to a request the agency may grant.
- — Plan management has three modes (ஏஜென்சி-மேனேஜ்டு, பிளான்-மேனேஜ்டு, செல்ஃப்-மேனேஜ்டு); the interpreter must keep them distinct, as they mean very different things for the family's paperwork.
- — 'Respite' is officially 'short-term accommodation' in NDIS language — keep both the everyday word (ஓய்வு) and the official term (குறுகிய கால தங்குமிட வசதி) so the parent recognises it when she reads the plan. Acronyms are written letter-by-letter in Tamil (என்.டி.ஐ.எஸ்.), never in Latin script.
Questions about this mock test
- Does the CCL test really include NDIS and workplace safety dialogues?
- Yes. Employment and welfare or disability services both sit inside the published topic range, and the CCL is a community-interpreting test by design — the settings are the ones migrants actually walk into. A safety induction, a planning meeting, a Centrelink appointment and a school interview are all fair game, and you find out which two you have on the day.
- How should I interpret acronyms like NDIS, PPE and WHS?
- Spell the letters out in Tamil — என்.டி.ஐ.எஸ். — rather than leaving Latin script sitting inside a Tamil sentence or inventing a translation nobody would recognise. Where the speaker supplies their own gloss, as the planner does with "National Disability Insurance Scheme", carry the gloss too: that clause is what lets the listener understand the initials.
- What if I don't know the Tamil for something like Capacity Building?
- Say what the funding does and keep a recognisable label beside it. The corpus renders it கேபாசிட்டி-பில்டிங், but a candidate who says "the part of the plan that pays for building his skills" and names it has lost far less than one who says "money". What you must never do is quietly drop the category — the mother has to find it in a document weeks later.
- How is this paper marked?
- Each dialogue is worth 45 marks, 90 in total. You need 63 overall and at least 29 on each dialogue, so a strong safety induction cannot rescue a weak planning meeting. Marks come off for omissions, additions, distortions and register errors, and an invented detail is treated more seriously than a missing one.
- Is the second dialogue harder than the first?
- Most candidates find it so. The induction is concrete — objects, body movements, a form to fill in — while the planning meeting is abstract: categories of funding, modes of management, a right to choose. Abstraction is where paraphrase creeps in, and paraphrase is where the specificity the listener actually needs disappears.
- Should I sit this cold the first time?
- Yes. Sit it once under exam conditions before you read a single model answer — the score you get that way is the only honest measurement you will make of yourself, and it tells you which half of the paper to work on. Then read through with the answers open and sit it again a week later.
