NAATI CCL Tamil Mock Test 5 — the numbers paper

Sit this paper with a pen in your hand. Across sixteen segments you are asked to carry a storm date, a dollar excess, a percentage and the sum it works out to, two separate deadlines counted in business days, a three-month legal window, three named driving tests and a points total for identification. Almost every mark on this test is a figure, a date or the proper name of an Australian process. The interpreting is not the hard part; the bookkeeping is.

Exam mode

Sit this paper like the real test

Model answers stay hidden. You’ll hear one segment at a time, interpret it out loud, then either record yourself for an automatic NAATI-style mark or reveal the answer and mark yourself. At the end you get a real 90-mark result against NAATI's actual pass rule.

Why these two topics appear together

A home insurance claim and a licensing counter look like unrelated errands, but they are the same exam problem twice. Both are Australian administrative systems explaining their rules to someone who has just arrived and is being handed conditions, thresholds and deadlines in a single breath. Candidates rarely fail these dialogues on vocabulary — the community already says எக்செஸ், அசெசர், ஃபுல் லைசன்ஸ் and மெடிகேர் in English. They fail because a forty-word segment hands over two or three quantities at once and only the first one survives. Pairing them means you cannot pass this paper by being good at one kind of memory and lucky about the other.

What the examiner is listening for

Where candidates lose marks on this paper

Each of these is a real line below. Tap through to see it in full.

  1. Dialogue 1 · Claims consultant · jump to the line

The trap. Opening with the excess and losing the date. The consultant says the claim is for the storm on the night of the fourteenth of June before mentioning any money, and the date is the first markable fact on the paper.

The fix. Two things go on your page before you speak: 14/6 and 750. Then give both — பதினான்காம் ஜூன் for the storm night and எழுநூற்று ஐம்பது டாலர் எக்செஸ் for the policy — in the order the consultant used.

  2. Dialogue 1 · Homeowner · jump to the line

The trap. Turning the homeowner's either/or into a single question. He is asking whether the seven hundred and fifty dollars is due now or after the work is finished, and separately whether the company pays for somewhere to live.

The fix. Note it as "750: now / after? + accom?" — six characters that hold two questions. Repeat the amount rather than saying "the excess", and finish with the accommodation question; it is what the next segment answers.

  3. Dialogue 1 · Claims consultant · jump to the line

The trap. Reporting either the percentage or the dollar figure, but not both, and stating that the excess must be paid up front. That last one is an addition, not an omission, and graders treat inventions more harshly.

The fix. Write "10% SI = 50k" on one line. Say the excess comes off the settlement, then give the entitlement twice as the consultant does — கட்டிட காப்பீட்டுத் தொகையில் பத்து சதவீதம் வரை, அதாவது ஐம்பதாயிரம் டாலர் வரை — while the house is unliveable.

  4. Dialogue 1 · Claims consultant · jump to the line

The trap. Flattening the covered-versus-not-covered contrast into a general remark about damage, and dropping the ten business days because the answer already felt complete.

The fix. Keep three things distinct: sudden storm damage is covered, மெதுவா வருற தேய்மானம் and பராமரிப்புக் குறைபாடு are not, and the decision comes பத்து வேலை நாட்களுக்குள். Then name ஏ. சி.ஏ. as the place a disagreement goes, letter by letter.

  5. Dialogue 2 · Service NSW licensing officer · jump to the line

The trap. Softening a flat refusal. India is not on the recognised-countries list and முடியாது means the transfer is not permitted — rendering it as "it might be difficult" or "they may not allow it" changes a legal fact into an opinion.

The fix. Say plainly that the licence cannot be transferred directly, and attach the deadline in the same breath: as a new permanent resident he must convert மூன்று மாதங்களுக்குள் of arriving. Both the refusal and the three months are marked.

  6. Dialogue 2 · Service NSW licensing officer · jump to the line

The trap. Summarising three named tests as "some driving tests", and collapsing the two fees. Listen also for தனித்தனி and விலக்கு in the same segment — separate fees, and no exemption. They sound alike and mean opposite things here.

The fix. Note them as a numbered list: 1 DKT, 2 HPT, 3 practical, then "fee + test fees, no exemption". Give the scheme names as டிரைவர் நாலெட்ஜ் டெஸ்ட், ஹேசர்ட் பெர்செப்ஷன் டெஸ்ட் and பிராக்டிகல் டிரைவிங் டெஸ்ட், never as invented Tamil descriptions.

  7. Dialogue 2 · Service NSW licensing officer · jump to the line

The trap. Glossing the identification requirement as "you'll need a lot of documents", and losing the restrictive மட்டுமே that limits the overseas licence to the three-month window.

The fix. நூறு பாயிண்ட் அடையாளம் is a fixed Australian concept with a number in it — keep the hundred. And keep the permission conditional: he may keep driving, but only அந்த மூன்று மாத கடைசி தேதி வரை மட்டுமே, after which the licence is not valid here.

  8. Dialogue 2 · Tamil-speaking new permanent resident · jump to the line

The trap. Dropping one of the three documents. Passport, மெடிகேர் கார்டு and மின்சார பில் are named at the end of the dialogue, when your working memory is fullest and the segment feels like a polite sign-off.

The fix. Three ticks in your notes: pp / medicare / elec. Then keep the urgency in முடிந்தவரை சீக்கிரம் — he will book the Knowledge Test straight away — and the reason, so as not to miss the three-month deadline.

Pacing this paper

Segments here run from 29 to 48 words and the density is uneven: the heaviest stack two separate quantities into one sentence. Rule your page into two halves before the audio starts, one per dialogue, and write down the left-hand margin only. Digits and symbols, never words — 14/6, 750, 3bd, 10%=50k, 15yr, 10bd for the first dialogue; 6yr, 3mo, DKT/HPT/prac, 100pts, pp+med+elec for the second. That is about twenty characters of writing for a paper worth ninety marks. Start speaking within roughly fifteen seconds, work down your notes in order, and do not stop mid-sentence to retrieve a number you did not write: finish the sentence, lose the one mark, keep the other three.

The full paper, with model answers

Both dialogues in full, each segment with its model answer in Tamil, a transliteration, the key terms and the examiner’s note. Play any line to hear it.

Storm Home Insurance Claim: Roof Damage, Excess and Temporary Accommodation

A Tamil-speaking homeowner lodges a home and contents claim after a storm blew tiles off the roof and let water into the house, and works through the excess, an assessor visit, the storm-versus-maintenance question and temporary accommodation cover.

The excess comes off your settlement, so you don't pay it up front. Your policy also covers temporary accommodation up to ten per cent of your building sum insured, which is fifty thousand dollars, while your home is unliveable.

That's exactly what the assessor decides. Sudden storm damage is covered, but gradual wear and tear or a lack of maintenance is not. We'll give you a decision within ten business days. If you disagree, you can lodge a complaint with AFCA.

Cultural & register notes

  • — 'எக்சஸ்' (excess) is a fixed Australian insurance term for the amount taken out of the settlement — here seven hundred and fifty dollars. Keep it as எக்சஸ்; do not turn it into 'கூடுதல் கட்டணம்'. Clients often assume it is a separate fee paid up front, when in fact it is deducted from the payout.
  • — The whole claim turns on storm versus maintenance: sudden, one-off storm damage is covered, while gradual தேய்மானம் (wear and tear) or பராமரிப்பு இல்லாமை (lack of maintenance) is not. Keep the two categories apart; do not merge them into a general 'சேதம்'.
  • — The money and percentage figures are linked: ten per cent of the building sum insured equals fifty thousand dollars. Say the amounts exactly as given — do not round them or convert them into some other counting unit.
  • — Australian names and bodies are written in Tamil letters: ஏ. சி.ஏ. (the complaints body — with dots so the letters are read one at a time), and everyday loanwords such as எக்சஸ், அசெசர், பாலிசி, கவர் and கார்பெட் are what the community actually says, so do not coin stiff literary replacements. Note also that கூரை is the outer, tiled roof and சீலிங் is the ceiling inside the room — the water dripped through the சீலிங் and the tiles blew off the கூரை; confusing the two garbles the damage list.

Converting an Overseas Licence at Service NSW

A Service NSW licensing officer explains to a newly arrived Tamil-speaking permanent resident that his six-year Indian full licence cannot be transferred directly and must be converted through tests within three months.

Welcome. I understand you've recently become a permanent resident and want to transfer your overseas driver's licence. Can I first confirm which country issued your current licence, and how long you've held it?

    Model answer

💡 Officer opens with நீங்க and the matching spoken verb ending -குறீங்க; Tamil's first person carries no gender marking, so the phrasing is identical whoever is asking. Keep 'பெர்மனன்ட் ரெசிடன்ட்' and 'ட்ரான்ஸ்பர்' as the loanwords a speaker actually reaches for, not a formal Tamil coinage.

    Model answer

Yes, my licence is from India and I've held it for a full six years — it's a full licence, not a learner's. I thought I could simply swap it for a NSW one.

💡 The number 'six years' and the full-licence/learner's contrast are load-bearing for the officer's next turn and must carry exactly. 'நினைச்சேன்' frames the swap as the client's own hopeful guess, so it renders as 'I thought I could…' rather than a flat statement. ஆமாம் here is a plain 'yes', not a separate pronoun.

  3. Segment 3 · Service NSW licensing officer · 37 wordsEnglish → Tamil

I see. Unfortunately India isn't on our list of recognised countries, so a full six-year licence can't be transferred directly. As a new permanent resident, you must convert to a NSW licence within three months of arriving.

💡 The 'three months' window and the negatives (இல்ல, ஆகாது) are the crux — do not soften into 'may be difficult'; these are flat refusals, not hedges. நீங்க மாத்திக்கணும் puts the obligation on the client, not the office.

💡 The two alternatives ('sit tests again' vs 'just fill in a form') must both land as a genuine either/or, not collapsed into one option. 'ஒண்ணுமே தெரியாம இருந்துச்சு' carries real surprise — 'I had no idea' — and that force should survive in the English. The repeated என்ன என்ன asks for a full list of steps, hence 'what exactly do I have to do'.

💡 All three test names are proper scheme names — keep them as the English names spelt out in Tamil (ட்ரைவர் நாலெட்ஜ் டெஸ்ட், ஹேசர்ட் பெர்செப்ஷன் டெஸ்ட், பிராக்டிகல் டிரைவிங் டெஸ்ட்), never translated into invented Tamil equivalents, and never left in Latin script. to keep driving தொடர்ந்து காரோட்டுவதுthodarndhu caarottuvadhuto get to work வேலைக்குப் போவதுvelaikkup povadhu

💡 'Until I've passed all these tests' is a conditional time clause — Tamil builds it with the paired ...வரைக்கும் frame, and it must survive so the officer's deadline answer lands correctly. The emphatic வெச்சே on 'என் இந்தியா லைசன்ஸ்' ('on my Indian licence, the one I already have') is emphasis, not an extra word. ஒண்ணு சொல்லுங்க is a softener — polite 'do tell me', not an impatient demand.

You may keep driving on your overseas licence, but only until that three-month deadline. After that it's no longer valid here. Also, to apply you must bring 100 points of identification and proof of your NSW residential address.

    deadline கடைசி தேதிkadaisi thedhi100 points of identification நூறு பாயிண்ட் அடையாளம்nooru point adaiyaalam

💡 The 'only until the three-month deadline' restriction is the crux — the restrictive மட்டும் தான் carries the 'only' and must not be dropped, and the figure must stay three. '100 points of ID' is an Australian identity concept written out as நூறு பாயிண்ட்; keep the figure exact, do not gloss it as 'a lot of documents'. என். டபிள்யூ. is dotted so the speech synthesiser reads it letter by letter.

    Model answer

Thank you very much, it's all clear now. I'll bring my passport, Medicare card and an electricity bill, and I'll book the Knowledge Test as soon as possible, so I don't miss the three-month deadline.

💡 Three ID/address documents are named (passport, Medicare card, electricity bill) — all three must be rendered, and மெடிகேர் stays as the loanword written in Tamil. Keep the 'three-month' reference. புக்கிங்கும் பண்ணிடுவேன் adds immediacy — 'I'll book it straight away' — and should surface as that urgency, not a plain future.

Cultural & register notes

  • — India is not on NSW's recognised-countries list, so a direct transfer is refused outright; the interpreter relays that refusal plainly, not as 'it might be tricky' — the legal consequence (must retest) turns on it landing as a flat 'no'.
  • — '100 points of identification' (நூறு பாயிண்ட் அடையாளம்) is a specific Australian identity-verification concept, not a literal exam score; keep the number exact and keep 'points' as the loanword பாயிண்ட் rather than translating it as a mark or grade.
  • — Australian document and agency names — Medicare card, Service NSW, an electricity bill, a passport — are everyday proof-of-identity items here. Tamil speakers say them in English, so they go into the Tamil written out in Tamil script டபிள்யூ.); never leave them in Latin letters, which the speech synthesiser mispronounces.
  • — The three-month conversion window is a hard legal deadline after which the overseas licence stops being valid; every mention of 'three months' and 'only until the deadline' must carry across exactly, since mishandling the timeframe could leave the client driving unlicensed.

Questions about this mock test

Am I allowed to take notes during the NAATI CCL test?
Yes — note-taking is part of how the task is meant to be done, and only your spoken interpreting is scored. Check NAATI's current instructions for what you may bring or will be supplied on the day, then practise with exactly that. On a paper like this one, candidates who do not write almost always lose a numeric segment.
What should I actually write in my notes?
Digits, symbols and initials, in the order you hear them, down the left margin. "750" not "seven hundred and fifty dollars"; "3bd" for three business days; "10%=50k" for a percentage and the sum it equals; a vertical list of three numbers for three named tests. If you find yourself writing a word, you have already fallen behind the audio.
Is this a real NAATI CCL Tamil exam paper?
No. NAATI does not release live test material, so nothing you find online is a real paper. This one is written to the published specification instead: two dialogues from different topic areas, around 300 words each, delivered in segments of roughly 35 words, with 45 marks available on each dialogue.
How many marks do I need to pass?
63 out of 90 overall, and at least 29 on each dialogue separately. The second condition is what makes a lopsided paper dangerous — 41 and 23 adds up to 64 and is still a fail. Marks come off for omissions, additions, distortions and register errors, and a wrong figure counts as a distortion.
Do I need to know how Australian insurance and licensing work?
You are not tested on the policy, but you cannot interpret what you do not recognise. Learn the handful of fixed terms that recur here — excess, sum insured, assessor, business days, AFCA, 100 points of identification, Driver Knowledge Test — because each is a named thing with a specific consequence, and a paraphrase is scored as terminology lost.
Why does this paper feel harder than a medical one?
Because there is nothing to infer. In a clinical dialogue an omitted detail can sometimes be reconstructed from context; a dollar figure or a deadline cannot. Every quantity on this paper is arbitrary, which means the only way to reproduce it is to have captured it, and that is exactly the skill being examined.
Should I convert dollar amounts or Tamil number words?
Never convert, and never round. Fifty thousand dollars stays fifty thousand dollars — do not restate it in lakhs, and do not offer a rupee equivalent. Tamil speakers who count in lakhs sometimes slip between ஐம்பதாயிரம் and ஒரு லட்சம் under pressure; on this paper that single slip fails the segment.
