NAATI CCL Tamil insurance practice test

Insurance dialogues are the ones candidates leave until last and then meet on the day. They read as ordinary conversations about money, and that is the trap: the words that carry the marks are technical terms wearing everyday clothes. This page works a full NSW CTP green slip dispute segment by segment, with every model answer in Tamil and transliteration, and gives you the other eleven insurance and super scenarios on this site — motor write-offs, storm damage, landlord cover, non-disclosure, hospital cover and an AFCA conciliation.

Model answers stay hidden. You’ll hear one segment at a time, interpret it out loud, then either record yourself for an automatic NAATI-style mark or reveal the answer and mark yourself. At the end you get a mark out of 45 against the 29 every dialogue has to clear on its own.

How examiners build a insurance & super dialogue

An insurance dialogue is built as a decision the client disagrees with, and everything in it exists to justify or challenge that decision. That gives the examiner two things to mark that other topics do not supply so cleanly. The first is a chain of interlocking quantities: a percentage of an income, a cap in weeks, an amount already paid, a deadline for objecting. They are arbitrary, so nothing in the context lets you reconstruct one you missed, and they usually arrive three to a segment. The second is a set of English words used as legal categories rather than as descriptions. A minor injury is not a small injury; an excess is not an extra charge; an internal review is a specific step that must happen before an external one. Candidates who translate the everyday sense of those words have not made a stylistic choice — they have told the client something untrue, and it is marked as a distortion. Expect the closing segment to be a procedural one, where the client repeats the steps back in order and asks for something in writing.

Where marks go on this topic

01Reading a legal category as a description

"Minor injury" under the Motor Accident Injuries Act is a classification that caps weekly payments and treatment, not a doctor's view that the injury is small. Render it as the category — சிறு காயம் — and let the two parties argue about the medicine, because that argument is the dialogue. A candidate who softens it to "nothing serious" has taken the insurer's side, invented a clinical opinion, and made the client's next question incomprehensible.

02Losing one figure out of three

Insurance segments cluster their numbers. One turn here carries a cap of twenty-six weeks, a sum of eight thousand five hundred dollars already paid on medical accounts, and a condition attached to both. Another gives ninety-five per cent first and eighty per cent afterwards, in that order and only in that order. Candidates reliably deliver two of three and stop, because the sentence sounds finished. Write the figures down as digits while the audio runs and read them back off the page.

03Merging or reversing a two-step remedy

Complaint pathways in Australian insurance are sequential and the sequence is the advice: internal review with the insurer first, within twenty-eight days, and only then the external body. Saying the client "can complain to the Commission" collapses a two-step process into one and skips the deadline that governs the first step. Keep the order, keep the number of days, and keep the reassurance that the external assessment costs the client nothing.

04Translating scheme and body names

CTP, green slip, the Motor Accident Injuries Act, the Personal Injury Commission, AFCA. These are names, not descriptions, and the client needs to be able to repeat them at a counter or write them on a form. They stay as loanwords inside the Tamil — சி.டி.பி., க்ரீன் ஸ்லிப், பர்சனல் இன்ஜரி கமிஷன் — with acronyms dotted so they are read out letter by letter. Inventing a Tamil equivalent is scored as terminology lost even when the meaning is roughly right.

05Rendering a reference number as a number

A claim number is a string of digits to be spoken one at a time, not a quantity. CTP-204871 is read out digit by digit — இரண்டு பூஜ்யம் நான்கு எட்டு ஏழு ஒன்று — because that is how a client copies it down. Saying "two hundred and four thousand" makes the reference unusable and is treated as a distortion of the fact, not as a matter of style. The same applies to policy numbers, event numbers and dates given in the opening segment.

06Flattening the client's disagreement

முடிவை சவால் செய்வது is to challenge or dispute a decision, and the client who says it has stated a position the officer must respond to. Softening it into "ask about the decision" or "find out more" removes the dispute and leaves the officer's answer about reviews and commissions floating with nothing to attach to. Interpret disagreement at the strength it was expressed, in both directions, without adding heat of your own.

Terms worth drilling before you sit this

Register in this setting

Both speakers are strangers in a professional setting, so நீங்க and honorific verb forms hold throughout in both directions — the claims officer is not being warm, they are being correct, and the injured driver is not being deferential out of fear. Her ஐயா is tone rather than content: it makes her polite, and English carries it in phrasing, not as an extra word. The harder half of the register problem is the officer. These dialogues deliver bad news in flat, procedural language, and candidates instinctively cushion it — "unfortunately only twenty-six weeks", "I'm afraid the claim may be refused". Adding sympathy the officer did not express is an addition, and removing the officer's own hedges is a distortion. Match the temperature exactly: neither party is shouting, and neither is apologising.

CTP Green Slip Claim: A Minor Injury Dispute

At an insurer interview, a NSW CTP claims officer explains why Mrs Rajendran's whiplash from a rear-end crash on the M4 is classed as a 'minor injury', capping her weekly payments and treatment at 26 weeks, and how she can dispute it.

Speakers: CTP insurance claims officer · Tamil-speaking injured driverLength: 237 words in 8 segmentsDirection: 4 into Tamil · 4 into EnglishLevel: intermediate

Thank you for coming in, Mrs Rajendran. I'm the claims officer handling your CTP green slip claim from the accident on the M4 on the third of March. Your claim number is CTP-204871.

    Model answer

💡 Carry the exact claim number CTP-204871 and the date (third of March) without altering a single digit; the digits are read out one by one (இரண்டு பூஜ்யம் நான்கு எட்டு ஏழு ஒன்று), and 'green slip' / சி.டி.பி. stay as loanwords.

  2. Segment 2 · Tamil-speaking injured driver · 24 wordsTamil → English

    Model answer

Thank you. My car was hit from behind, and since then I've had a lot of pain in my neck. I still haven't been able to go back to work. Please tell me what I'll receive.

hit from behind பின்னாடியிருந்து மோதுறதுpinnaadiyirundhu mothurathuneck pain கழுத்துல வலிkazhuthula vali

💡 'பின்னாடியிருந்து மோதிட்டாங்க' = was hit from behind; render as a passive event happening to her, not that she hit someone. Keep her polite 'சார்' as tone, not extra content — Tamil politeness here rides on the -ங்க verb ending and the address term, not on a separate honorific noun.

  3. Segment 3 · CTP insurance claims officer · 37 wordsEnglish → Tamil

Your whiplash is currently classified as a 'minor injury' under the Motor Accident Injuries Act. That means weekly payments cover ninety-five per cent of your pre-accident earnings at first, then eighty per cent after the first period.

    Model answer

💡 Two distinct percentages must land exactly: ninety-five per cent (தொண்ணூத்தைந்து சதவீதம்) first, then eighty per cent (எண்பது சதவீதம்). Keep the Act name as a loanword; 'minor injury' is a legal category, not a comment on severity.

  4. Segment 4 · Tamil-speaking injured driver · 23 wordsTamil → English

    Model answer

But my neck pain is still very bad. How is this a 'minor injury'? And how long will these weekly payments and treatment keep coming for me?

💡 Two separate questions here (why 'minor', and for how long) — the interpreter must deliver both; dropping either loses marks. 'சிகிச்சை' = treatment, distinct from the weekly payments.

  5. Segment 5 · CTP insurance claims officer · 39 wordsEnglish → Tamil

For a minor injury, weekly payments and treatment are only funded up to twenty-six weeks. We've paid eight thousand five hundred dollars in medical accounts. They continue past that only if an independent medical assessment finds a non-minor injury.

    Model answer

💡 Three numbers/facts must all carry: twenty-six weeks (இருபத்தாறு வாரம்), eight thousand five hundred dollars (எட்டாயிரத்து ஐநூறு டாலர்), and the 'non-minor injury' condition. எட்டாயிரத்து ஐநூறு = eight thousand five hundred exactly.

  6. Segment 6 · Tamil-speaking injured driver · 20 wordsTamil → English

intha mudivai naan opukkala. en doctor solraaru kaayam seriousnu. intha 'siru kaayam' mudivai naan saavaal panna ninaichaa, naan enna pannanum?

    Model answer

I don't agree with this decision. My doctor says the injury is serious. If I want to challenge this 'minor injury' decision, what can I do?

    I don't agree நான் ஒப்புக்கலnaan opukkalachallenge the decision முடிவை சவால் பண்றதுmudivai saavaal pandrathu

    💡 'சவால் பண்ணுறது' = to challenge/dispute; don't soften to 'ask about'. 'சீரியஸ்' (serious) contrasts with the insurer's 'சிறு' (minor) — keep the contrast sharp.

  7. Segment 7 · CTP insurance claims officer · 40 wordsEnglish → Tamil

You can first ask us for an internal review of the decision within twenty-eight days. If you're not satisfied, you can take the dispute to the Personal Injury Commission, which arranges an independent medical assessment at no cost to you.

    Model answer

    internal review இன்டர்னல் ரிவ்யூinternal reviewat no cost எந்த செலவும் இல்லாமentha selavum illaama

💡 Two-step remedy in order: internal review within twenty-eight days (இருபத்தெட்டு நாள்), THEN the Personal Injury Commission. Keep பர்சனல் இன்ஜரி கமிஷன் as the body's name; carry 'at no cost' — a key reassurance.

  8. Segment 8 · Tamil-speaking injured driver · 21 wordsTamil → English

    Model answer

Alright, I understand. So I'll first apply for an internal review, and if needed I'll go to the Personal Injury Commission. Can you give me all of this in writing?

💡 She confirms the sequence back — the interpreter must keep the order (review first, Commission if needed). 'எழுத்துல தர வேண்டும்' = to provide in writing; render as a request, keeping her polite tone.

Cultural & register notes

  • — 'Minor injury' under the NSW Motor Accident Injuries Act is a legal classification that caps benefits, not a doctor's opinion that the injury is small — interpret it as the category name (சிறு காயம்) and let the parties argue the medicine; never editorialise it as 'nothing serious'.
  • — Scheme and body names stay as loanwords inside the Tamil: சி. Names said as ordinary words are written as words; acronyms take dots so the audio spells them out. Inventing Tamil calques (e.g. for 'Personal Injury Commission') would confuse the client and cost accuracy marks.
  • — Money and time markers are the highest-risk items here: eight thousand five hundred dollars = எட்டாயிரத்து ஐநூறு டாலர், twenty-six weeks = இருபத்தாறு வாரம், twenty-eight days = இருபத்தெட்டு நாள், and the twin percentages ninety-five per cent/eighty per cent must each transfer exactly and in the right order.
  • — The remedy has a strict two-step order — internal review with the insurer first (within twenty-eight days), then escalation to the Personal Injury Commission. Reversing or merging these steps distorts the meaning; the interpreter must preserve the sequence and the 'at no cost' detail.
  • — Use நீங்க throughout: the claims officer and injured driver are strangers in a professional setting, so second-person address stays respectful on both sides.

Questions about insurance & super dialogues

How likely is an insurance dialogue in the NAATI CCL Tamil test?
Insurance and superannuation sit inside the published range of community topics, alongside health, legal, housing and employment. You are not told which two topics you will get until the day, and insurance overlaps heavily with the others — a car accident dialogue is part legal, an income protection claim is part medical — so practising it pays off more widely than the label suggests.
What is a CTP green slip, and do I need to understand it?
It is the compulsory third party motor injury cover attached to vehicle registration, and — this is the part that matters in the dialogue — it pays for injuries to people rather than damage to cars. You are not examined on the scheme, but you do need to recognise the term, keep it as a name rather than a description, and know that weekly payments, treatment and the minor-injury classification are separate things it decides.
How do I handle numbers in an insurance dialogue?
Write them as digits while the audio is still playing, in the order they arrive, and read them back off the page. Never round, never convert to lakhs, and never merge two figures into a summary. Reference numbers are spoken digit by digit; quantities are spoken as quantities. Losing a single figure is usually enough to fail a segment outright.
What if I don't know the Tamil for an insurance term?
Use what the community actually says. Tamil speakers in Australia say கிளைம், எக்சஸ், பாலிசி, கவர் and பிரீமியம், and those loanwords are the correct answer, not a fallback. What loses marks is inventing a stiff pure-Tamil calque the client would not recognise, or leaving a run of English in a way the audio cannot carry.
How many marks is one insurance dialogue worth?
45, with a floor of 29 on that dialogue alone regardless of how the other one went. Since two dialogues make 90 and 63 is the pass, a strong medical performance cannot rescue a weak insurance one. That per-dialogue rule is the reason to practise the topic you would rather avoid.
Should I explain a term the client seems not to understand?
No. You interpret what was said, including the client's confusion and the officer's explanation of it. Stepping out of role to add your own gloss is an addition and is marked as one, even when your explanation is correct. If the officer explains the term, render the explanation; if they don't, the gap is theirs, not yours.
