A mother sits down at Centrelink to claim the Child Care Subsidy for a three-year-old in family day care, and inside eight segments she has to absorb an activity test, a fortnightly hours cap, a percentage set by household income and a warning about ending up in debt. That dialogue is worked here in full, with every model answer in Tamil and transliteration, and it is joined by seven more family scenarios — child support, mediation, divorce instructions, kinship care, aged care, counselling intake and a birth registration.

How examiners build a family & relationships dialogue
Family dialogues carry the heaviest register load of anything on the CCL, and they carry it in two layers. The first layer is kinship. Tamil names a relationship by which side of the family it belongs to and where it sits in seniority, so a single Tamil word can encode information that English needs a clause to state — மருமகள், மகன் மகன், உறவினர் பராமரிப்பாளர் all arrive pre-loaded with facts a caseworker will act on. Flatten them into "my uncle", "my brother" or "a relative" and you have not simplified anything; you have deleted evidence. The second layer is feeling. The people in these scenarios are ashamed of a debt, frightened of a partner, grieving, or protecting someone they are about to name to a government officer. That emotional content is data the officer uses to decide what happens next, which is exactly why examiners put it in, and it must come out at the intensity it went in — neither talked down into politeness nor pumped up into drama. On top of both layers sits ordinary welfare arithmetic, and it is unforgiving: hours, fortnights, percentages and income figures all have to survive intact while you are busy managing the tone.
Where marks go on this topic
01Flattening a kinship term into the nearest English word
English collapses whole branches of a family into one word, and candidates let it. மருமகள் is a son's wife, and a உறவினர் பராமரிப்பாளர் is a relative formally caring for a child under a child protection arrangement — Tamil even keeps two separate words for "grandson" depending on which side of the family he comes through, மகன் மகன் for a son's son and மகள் மகன் for a daughter's son. When the grandmother in this dialogue tells the caseworker அவளோட அம்மா, அதாவது என் மருமகள், the precise relationship is what the caseworker needs, not a generic "my daughter" — that swaps who is actually in the household. Going the other way is just as costly: if the caseworker says "my grandson", the Tamil has to pick மகன் மகன் or மகள் மகன் correctly, not reach for a generic word for grandchild.
02Forcing a gender onto verbs that cannot carry one
Tamil marks gender on the verb only in the THIRD person, and candidates coming from a language that marks it in the first person keep looking for agreement that is not there. In segment 8 the mother says நான் … பண்றேன் and … அப்டேட் பண்ணிக்கிட்டே இருப்பேன்: those endings are identical whoever is speaking, and a want-statement built on எனக்கு … வேணும் takes no personal ending at all. Do not manufacture an agreement Tamil has no way to express — there is nothing to preserve and the attempt produces a form that does not exist. Where agreement genuinely bites is the third person, and it bites on respect as much as on sex: அவன்/அவ take -ான்/-ாள், while the respectful அவர்/அவங்க take -ார்/-ாங்க for a man or a woman alike. Reaching for அவ about the caseworker, or அவங்க about a small child, is perfectly grammatical and still wrong: the first is disrespectful and the second is oddly formal. Decide who is being spoken about and at what level of respect, and hold that choice steady across the turn.
03Blurring the fortnight into an ordinary week
Australian welfare runs on fortnights, and Tamil has no single word for one — it has to be built: ஒவ்வொரு இரண்டு வாரமும், every two weeks. Say வாரம் on its own, without ஒவ்வொரு இரண்டு, and you have silently lost the two-week multiplier, which in this dialogue governs both the thirty activity hours and the seventy-two subsidised hours and makes the officer's reassurance about three days a week nonsense. It is the most mechanical error on this page and the easiest to drill out.
04Answering the question instead of interpreting it
In segment 4 the mother asks two things at once: whether the government pays the whole fee or only part of it, and what percentage she will get. The officer answers both in the next turn. Candidates who already know the answer routinely merge her question into a single tidied-up query, or answer the first half themselves before the officer speaks. Both are additions, which graders treat more harshly than omissions because you have put words in a speaker's mouth.
05Turning a named scheme into a description of it
These are the names of specific instruments with specific consequences, and Australian Tamil speakers use them in English, spelled out in Tamil. "Government help with childcare" is not the Child Care Subsidy, and "the bit you pay" is not the gap fee. Once you pick a rendering for a scheme name, use the identical wording every time it recurs in the dialogue.
06Rounding the emotion off the sentence
"That is a big relief", "I feel scared", "he shouts loudly", "my friend ended up owing the government money" — candidates under pressure convert all of these into neutral reporting because neutral reporting is faster and feels more professional. It is neither. A counsellor deciding whether to ask a safety question, or an officer deciding how much reassurance to give, is reading the intensity you supply. Deliver it as spoken: no softening, no amplifying, no commentary of your own.
Terms worth drilling before you sit this
- Child Care Subsidyசைல்ட் கேர் சப்சிடிchild care subsidy
சைல்ட் கேர் சப்சிடி. A named payment, always the same wording, and distinct from the family payments discussed in the birth-registration dialogue.
- activity testஆக்டிவிட்டி டெஸ்ட்activity test
ஆக்டிவிட்டி டெஸ்ட் — a fixed scheme term, not a medical or physical test. It is the hinge of the whole interview: hours of activity in, subsidised hours out.
- fortnightஇரண்டு வாரம்irandu vaaram
ஒவ்வொரு இரண்டு வாரமும். Build it as two weeks every time. Both the thirty hours worked and the seventy-two hours subsidised hang off this period.
- combined incomeமொத்த வருமானம்motha varumaanam
குடும்ப மொத்த வருமானம் — the household's income, not the claimant's. Losing "combined" makes the 78% figure look like it was set by her earnings alone.
- gap feeகேப் பீஸ்gap fee
கேப் ஃபீ. What the parent still pays after the subsidy goes to the provider. Concrete money, so never render it as a vague remainder.
- overpayment debtஅதிகமா செலுத்தின கடன்adhigamaa seluththina kadan
அதிகமா செலுத்தின கடன். The consequence of an under-estimated income, and the thing the mother is trying to avoid. Keep the cause and the consequence linked as the officer linked them.
- enrolmentஎன்ரோல்மென்ட்enrolment
என்ரோல்மென்ட். Confirming it on மை காவ் is a condition of payment starting, not an administrative nicety. Carry it as one of two protective actions, never as advice in general.
- grandsonபேரன்peran
மகன் மகன் — specifically a son's son; a daughter's son is மகள் மகன். In the kinship care dialogue the exact relationship is what qualifies the carer, so a generic "my grandchild" drops both the side of the family and the specificity the assessment turns on.
- daughter-in-lawமருமகள்marumagal
மருமகள். English needs three words and Tamil one, which is precisely why candidates reach for "my son's wife" or, worse, "my daughter" — a substitution that changes who is in the household.
- kinship carerஉறவினர் பராமரிப்பாளர்uravinar paaraamarippaalar
உறவினர் பராமரிப்பாளர் — a formal child protection role, not a description of a helpful relative. It comes with checks, an allowance and a case plan, all of which appear in that dialogue.
- family violenceகுடும்ப வன்முறைkudumba vanmurai
குடும்ப வன்முறை. Say it plainly when it is said plainly. Euphemising it in either direction misrepresents a disclosure that determines what the practitioner does next.
- Section 60I certificateசெக்ஷன் சிக்ஸ்டி ஐ சர்டிபிகேட்section sixty i certificate
செக்ஷன் சிக்ஸ்டி ஐ சர்டிபிகேட் — the section number is part of the name and is spoken out. Dropping the number leaves a certificate that no court can identify.
Register in this setting
The mother in this dialogue never stops being formal with the officer. She holds நீங்க throughout, opens with ஆமாங்க as a respectful acknowledgement rather than a plain yes, and phrases her request as சொல்லுங்க — a polite imperative softened into an ask, not a demand. She keeps that level even at her most anxious, and even when she is quoting a தோழி who would never be addressed that way herself; the report of a friend's words does not license a change of register in the frame around it. Your English rendering should sit in neutral professional "you" rather than manufacturing extra deference that does not exist in the target language. The trap in the other direction is over-formalising the officer. She speaks like a person doing a job, explaining a subsidy in ordinary sentences, so an answer built out of high Tamil register makes her sound like a court clerk rather than a caseworker — and register errors are marked whichever way they run.

Questions about family & relationships dialogues
- Which family situations show up in a CCL Tamil dialogue?
- Child support, separation and divorce, mediation and parenting plans, child care and family payments, kinship and foster care, aged care and guardianship, counselling and family violence, and registering a birth. Every one of those has a scenario here, which matters because you learn your two topics on the day itself.
- How do I handle Tamil kinship terms with no single English word?
- Unpack them rather than approximate them. A relationship named by side of the family and seniority in Tamil usually needs a short English phrase — "my son's wife", "my mother's younger brother" — and that phrase is the correct answer. Substituting a generic "uncle" or "relative" is scored as an omission, because a caseworker uses that detail.
- Should I interpret it when a speaker is upset or crying?
- Interpret what they say, at the strength they say it, and nothing else. Do not describe their state, do not comfort them, and do not step out of role. If someone says they are frightened of their husband, that sentence goes across whole — it is the trigger for the professional's next question, and softening it can stop that question being asked.
- How much does one family dialogue count towards passing?
- 45 marks out of the 90 available, with a floor of 29 on each dialogue and 63 needed overall. Register errors count against that total alongside omissions, additions and distortions, which is why a family dialogue rendered accurately but in the wrong tone can still sink a paper.
- Do I need to understand how Centrelink payments work?
- You need enough to keep the mechanism straight, not enough to advise anyone. Know that a subsidy percentage is set by household income, that it is usually paid to the provider rather than the parent, and that an inaccurate income estimate creates a debt. That is the shape of most family welfare dialogues, and knowing the shape stops you guessing mid-segment.
