Mock Test 8 — sole divorce application, then GST registration
- 16 segments

Sixteen segments, two advanced dialogues, and nothing whatsoever connecting them. A family lawyer takes instructions on a sole divorce application; then, with no pause and no change of gear offered to you, a registered BAS agent explains what passing the seventy-five thousand dollar turnover threshold does to a restaurant. This paper is harder than the test you will actually sit — real papers rarely put two advanced dialogues together, and almost never two this far apart in tone. That is the point. If you can hold your voice steady across this gap, the pairing you get on the day will feel like a lighter version of something you have already done.

Model answers stay hidden. You’ll hear one segment at a time, interpret it out loud, then either record yourself for an automatic NAATI-style mark or reveal the answer and mark yourself. At the end you get a real 90-mark result against NAATI's actual pass rule.

Why these two topics appear together
Your two dialogues are drawn from unrelated topic areas, and you find out what they are as they start. Family and small business is a perfectly ordinary draw — both are on the published topic range, both are places Tamil speakers in Australia genuinely need interpreters — but they demand opposite things from you. The divorce instructions are emotionally loaded and legally exact at the same time: a man is describing the end of his marriage while a solicitor pins down dates and deadlines. The GST briefing has no emotional content at all beyond a thin profit margin; it is a wall of acronyms, percentages and a lodgement date. Candidates prepare for each of these separately and then fall apart at the seam between them.
What the examiner is listening for
- 01A flat, exact voice over emotionally loaded content. The client is unsettled — he says he is finding this hard to understand, and at the end that he will not delay — and your job is to carry that at the intensity he used, without comforting him and without dramatising him.
- 02Two twelve-month periods kept apart. Twelve months of separation is what lets him file; twelve months from the divorce becoming final is his window to start a property settlement. Merge them and you have given legal advice nobody said.
- 03Australian names surviving as names in both halves: ஃபெடரல் சர்க்யூட் அண்ட் ஃபேமிலி கோர்ட் ஆஃப் ஆஸ்திரேலியா and சென்டர்லிங்க் in the first dialogue, ஏ.டி.ஓ., பி.ஏ.எஸ்., ஜி.எஸ்.டி. and பி.ஏ.வை.ஜி. read out letter by letter in the second.
- 04Every figure, in both dialogues. Candidates treat the divorce paper as a feelings dialogue and the tax paper as a numbers dialogue, but the first one carries a separation date, two children's ages, an under-eighteen rule and an eleven-hundred-dollar fee.
- 05Negation and hearsay markers, which is where meaning flips rather than fades. அவளுடைய சம்மதம் இல்லாமல் means without her consent; நான் கேள்விப்பட்டேன் means the speaker has only heard this, not confirmed it. Both appear in this paper and both reverse or overstate the message if dropped.
- 06Loanwords left as loanwords in the business half. ஜி.எஸ்.டி., காஷ் அக்கவுண்டிங், அக்ருவல்ஸ் அக்கவுண்டிங் and இன்வாய்ஸ் are what Tamil business owners in Australia actually say; reaching for பொருள் மற்றும் சேவை வரி because the register feels formal is the classic overcorrection after a legal dialogue.
Where candidates lose marks on this paper
Each of these is a real line below. Tap through to see it in full.
Dialogue 1 · Family Lawyer · jump to the line
The trap. Rendering the sole application as though it were a joint one, or thinning the court's full name down to "the family court". Both are treated as content errors, not style.
The fix. Sole means filed by one party alone — தனி, never கூட்டு. Keep the whole court name as a borrowed name in Tamil, and say the separation date as a full date rather than "in March".
Dialogue 1 · Tamil-speaking client · jump to the line
The trap. Reversing the client's question by losing the negation. இல்லாமல் in அவளுடைய சம்மதம் இல்லாமல் carries the whole of "without", and it sits at the very end of a long sentence.
The fix. Say "can I apply for the divorce on my own, without her consent?" — and keep it a question. Also carry the admission that he is finding this hard to understand — that emotional content is part of what you're interpreting, not just the legal question.
Dialogue 1 · Family Lawyer · jump to the line
The trap. Delivering three of the four things the court must be satisfied about. Care, housing, schooling and financial support are a list, and a list is where attention runs out.
The fix. All four, plus the age rule — பதினெட்டு வயதுக்கு குறைவான, under eighteen. Note the list as four ticks on your paper before you start speaking; there is no way to reconstruct a dropped item from context.
Dialogue 1 · Family Lawyer · jump to the line
The trap. Collapsing the two twelve-month periods, or softening "you'll likely qualify" into a promise that the reduced fee applies. One is a distortion, the other is an addition.
The fix. Eleven hundred dollars, ஆயிரத்து நூறு டாலர், exact. Then keep the deadline attached to its own trigger: twelve months from when the divorce becomes final, to start a property settlement. Keep "likely" as likely.
Dialogue 1 · Tamil-speaking client · jump to the line
The trap. Translating வாய்ப்பு கையை விட்டு போயிடும் literally, or stepping out of role to reassure a client who has just realised he is on a clock.
The fix. It means he will lose the chance — render the meaning. Tamil carries the realisation through the sentence itself, not a special verb form, so "so I must file within those twelve months" is the right shape. Say it and stop; you are the voice, not a participant.
Dialogue 2 · Registered BAS agent · jump to the line
The trap. Merging charging GST and claiming GST credits into one idea about tax. They are two separate mechanisms and the agent is answering a worried question with both.
The fix. Ten percent goes on top of menu prices and the customer pays it; separately, credits come back on business purchases. Carry all three examples — ingredients, equipment, and rent where rent includes GST.
Dialogue 2 · Registered BAS agent · jump to the line
The trap. Dropping "minus" from "the GST you collected minus the credits you're claiming", which turns a net figure into a gross one, or rounding the lodgement date.
The fix. The date is the twenty-eighth of October twenty twenty-six and it has to arrive whole. Then say collected minus claimed, in that order — the subtraction is the entire content of the sentence.
Dialogue 2 · Restaurant owner · jump to the line
The trap. Answering only the first of two questions. The owner asks for the cash-versus-accruals difference and asks whether PAYG appears on the same BAS; the second one is easy to lose behind the acronyms.
The fix. Interpret both, in order. Write "cash/accr?" and "PAYG same BAS?" as two marks on your paper the moment you hear them — this is a segment where a note of two words saves a whole question.
Pacing this paper
Segments here run from thirty to forty words, so the long ones are at the top of the exam's range and there are several of them in a row. Treat the change of dialogue as a hard reset: sit back, breathe out, and let the lawyer's voice go before the BAS agent starts, because the commonest failure on this paper is carrying a careful, sympathetic legal register into a briefing about lodgement dates and then over-formalising the tax vocabulary. Note differently for each half too — dates and the two twelve-month periods in the first dialogue, bare digits and acronyms in the second. Roughly ten minutes each, and never go back.

Instructions For A Sole Divorce Application
A family lawyer takes instructions from a Tamil-speaking client on a sole divorce application to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, confirming the separation date, the arrangements for two children, the reduced filing fee, and the property-settlement deadline.

That's become very clear; the cash method is the right one. Last question — I'll have to keep all my tax invoices and records for five years, won't I, in case the ATO ever audits?

Cultural & register notes
Questions about this mock test
- Why is this mock test harder than the real NAATI CCL exam?
- Two reasons. Both dialogues are advanced rather than one advanced and one moderate, and their subject matter sits about as far apart as the topic range allows. The real test uses two unrelated topics too, but it rarely stacks this much terminology and this much emotional content in one paper. Practise above the line and the line feels lower.
- How do I switch register between two unrelated dialogues?
- Decide in advance that the change happens in the silence between them, not in your first sentence of the new one. Physically reset — shoulders, breath, a fresh page of notes. The candidates who struggle are the ones still half-inside the previous speaker's world when the first new segment plays, and they usually announce it by over-formalising ordinary loanwords.
- Does family law really come up in the CCL test?
- Family and legal matters are both on the published topic range, and separation, children's arrangements and court fees are exactly the kind of community business an interpreter is booked for. You will not be asked to know the law. You will be asked to move a solicitor's precise wording across without adding, softening or explaining.
- Do I need to understand GST to interpret this dialogue?
- No, but you do need the words to be automatic. ஜி.எஸ்.டி., பி.ஏ.எஸ்., பி.ஏ.வை.ஜி. தவணை, காலாண்டு, காஷ் அக்கவுண்டிங் and அக்ருவல்ஸ் அக்கவுண்டிங் are the vocabulary Tamil business owners in Australia use daily. If you have to search for them mid-segment, you will lose the number that was said while you searched.
- How is this paper scored?
- Each dialogue is worth 45 marks, 90 in total. You need 63 overall and at least 29 on each dialogue, so a strong divorce dialogue cannot rescue a collapsed GST one. Marks come off for omissions, additions, distortions and register errors, and on this paper the register errors cluster at the join between the two dialogues.
- Is this a real past NAATI CCL paper?
- No. NAATI does not publish live test material and nobody selling you a past paper has one. This is built to the published specification — two dialogues from different topic areas, roughly 300 words each, delivered in segments of about 35 words — and then pitched harder on purpose.
