A great many Tamil families in Australia run a food business — a takeaway, a bakery, a cafe, a restaurant — and the professional conversations that come with it are exactly what a community interpreter gets booked for. This page works one of them in full: a bakery owner sitting down with a Fair Work adviser before hiring her first full-time employee, every segment with a model answer in Tamil and transliteration. Around it sit the other seven business scenarios on this site, from an ABN application to a retail lease, and the terminology that decides these dialogues.

Model answers stay hidden. You’ll hear one segment at a time, interpret it out loud, then either record yourself for an automatic NAATI-style mark or reveal the answer and mark yourself. At the end you get a mark out of 45 against the 29 every dialogue has to clear on its own.

How examiners build a small business dialogue
A business dialogue is built as an obligations checklist wearing the clothes of a conversation. Someone with a professional role — an adviser, a BAS agent, a council officer, a lender — tells a Tamil-speaking owner what the law requires, and almost every requirement arrives attached to a number: a rate, a percentage, a threshold, a headcount, a deadline. The examiner is testing whether those numbers and the named schemes they belong to survive intact, in order, without you tidying them into a summary. The second thing being tested is proper nouns. Business dialogues are unusually dense with Australian institutional names — awards, statements, declarations, agencies — and every one of them is a real document or body the owner will have to ask for by name. A rendering that describes what the document does instead of naming it has failed the segment even if the meaning is broadly right. The third thing, quieter and just as expensive, is that owners ask two questions at once. Money is on their mind, so they stack a worry onto a query and move on, and half the question goes missing.
Where marks go on this topic
01Translating a scheme name instead of transliterating it
Keep the English name, write it in Tamil so the audio pronounces it, and resist the pull to sound formal by inventing a Tamil calque — ஜி.எஸ்.டி. does not become பொருட்கள் மற்றும் சேவை வரி. Acronyms are read letter by letter with dots.
02Answering only the first half of a stacked question
Owners bundle. In the worked dialogue she asks whether super is paid every month or every three months and, in the same breath, which forms the new employee has to complete before she starts. Elsewhere a restaurant owner asks for the cash-versus-accruals difference and whether PAYG comes on the same BAS. Both halves are marked. Put two ticks on your paper the moment you hear a question turn into two.
03Rounding a threshold into a description
Thirty-eight ordinary hours, twelve percent superannuation, fewer than fifteen staff, six months, seventy-five thousand dollars of turnover, twenty-one days to register, five years of records. Each of those is the whole content of its clause, and "about" or "roughly" in front of one is an alteration. If a segment contains a number and a name, write the number first — the name you can usually rebuild from context, the number never.
04Promoting hearsay to fact
The reporting frame நான் கேள்விப்பட்டேன் marks something the owner has picked up and wants confirmed, not something she is asserting. "I have heard there is some kind of six-month period" is a question in disguise, and the adviser's answer corrects and names it. Render it as reported and uncertain; stating it flatly makes the owner sound informed and makes the adviser's reply look redundant.
05Treating a named legal concept as a general one
The minimum employment period is not a probation. Unfair dismissal is not "being sacked unfairly" in a loose sense, and workers compensation insurance is not "insurance for staff". These are defined instruments with thresholds attached, and the whole point of the segment is that the owner learns the name so she can act on it. Keep the loanword the owner herself uses later in the dialogue.
06Dropping the respectful third-person form mid-dialogue
The bakery owner is a woman, but Tamil doesn't mark that on every verb the way a candidate might expect. Her want-statements and her own past tense — எனக்குப் புரிஞ்சுது, எனக்குக் கிடைக்காது — carry no ending that shows gender at all: they read exactly the same whether a man or a woman says them, so don't force a feminine suffix onto them that isn't there. What has to stay consistent instead is how the new employee is referred to: she is also a woman, and every turn that names her must keep the respectful அவள் / அவங்க — never drop her to a lesser or inconsistent form partway through. Candidates who invent a feminine ending on the owner's own speech, or who start her off as அவள் / அவங்க and then drift to something less respectful, have made the Tamil inconsistent, and inconsistent register is heard immediately by a native-speaking examiner.
Terms worth drilling before you sit this
- minimum wageகுறைந்தபட்ச ஊதியம்kuraindhapatcha oodhiyam
குறைந்தபட்ச ஊதியம், and it never travels alone — it comes with the award that sets it, the classification level and the hourly figure. Drop any of those three and the answer is incomplete.
- penalty ratesபெனால்டி ரேட்penalty ret
பெனால்டி ரேட், the higher weekend and public-holiday rate. Do not render it as a fine; a candidate who hears "penalty" and reaches for தண்டம் has reversed who is being paid.
- superannuationசூப்பரானுவேஷன்superannuation
சூப்பர் ஆன்யுவேஷன் is paid on top of wages into the employee's own chosen fund — not deducted from her pay. If you blur that, you have told the owner something financially false.
- twelve percentபன்னிரண்டு சதவீதம்pannirandu sadhaveedham
The current super guarantee. Percentages in business dialogues are the single most marked item on the page, so say the figure before you attempt the rest of the sentence.
- minimum employment periodமினிமம் எம்ப்ளாய்மென்ட் பீரியட்minimum employment period
மினிமம் எம்ப்ளாய்மென்ட் பீரியட் — six months in a business with fewer than fifteen staff. Both numbers belong to it, and calling it probation loses the unfair-dismissal consequence entirely.
- unfair dismissalஅன்ஃபேர் டிஸ்மிசல்unfair dismissal
அன்ஃபேர் டிஸ்மிசல், a claim an employee can make, not an event. "She generally can't claim unfair dismissal" keeps the hedge and the mechanism; "you can sack her" throws away both.
- workers compensation insuranceவொர்க்கர்ஸ் காம்பென்சேஷன் இன்சூரன்ஸ்workers compensation insurance
வொர்க்கர்ஸ் காம்பென்சேஷன் இன்சூரன்ஸ் — compulsory before the employee starts, and the owner repeats the term back later, so an invented substitute breaks the thread of the dialogue.
- Fair Work Information Statementஃபேர் வொர்க் இன்ஃபர்மேஷன் ஸ்டேட்மென்ட்fair work information statement
A specific document the employer must hand over. Name it going both ways: ஃபேர் வொர்க் இன்ஃபர்மேஷன் ஸ்டேட்மெண்ட் into Tamil, the full English name coming back.
- Tax File Number declarationடாக்ஸ் ஃபைல் நம்பர் டிக்ளரேஷன்taaks file number dikleareshan
The form that lets the employer withhold the right amount of tax. "Tax paperwork" is not enough — the examiner is listening for a named form the owner can request.
- turnoverடர்னோவர்tarnovar
டர்ன்ஓவர், total takings, not profit. Owners in these dialogues worry about லாபம் in the very next breath, and swapping the two changes which threshold applies.
- Business Activity Statement (BAS)பி.ஏ.எஸ்.pi.e.es.
பி.ஏ.எஸ்., lodged each quarter — காலாண்டுக்கு ஒருமுறை. Report the GST collected minus the credits claimed; dropping "minus" converts a net figure into a gross one.
- sole traderசோல் ட்ரேடர்sole trader
சோல் ட்ரேடர் stays a loanword. The structural contrast with a company carries unlimited personal liability with it, so keep the label precise wherever it appears.
Register in this setting
The relationship in every one of these dialogues is professional adviser to business owner, so formal நீங்க and honorific verb endings run from start to finish on both sides, and any slip to நீ is scored as a register error however good the content. There is a second, subtler register line inside the owner's own speech. She talks about her money plainly and sometimes bluntly — a margin that is already thin, twelve percent being quite a lot — and that bluntness is content, not noise, so do not smooth it into polite neutrality. Third parties are handled respectfully too: the employee being hired is அவங்க, never a casual pronoun. And keep the vocabulary at the level the speakers themselves use. Tamil business owners in Australia say ஜி.எஸ்.டி., இன்வாய்ஸ், பெனால்டி ரேட் and சூப்பர் ஆன்யுவேஷன்; lifting them into stiff textbook Tamil sounds like a different person is speaking.

Questions about small business dialogues
- Does small business really come up in the NAATI CCL Tamil test?
- Yes. Employment, financial and business matters are all inside the published topic range, and the scenarios are the ordinary ones: registering a business, hiring staff, tax obligations, a shop lease, insurance, council food rules. If you or your family run a takeaway or a cafe, you already know the setting — what you need is the vocabulary under time pressure.
- Do I need to understand Australian tax and employment law?
- No. You are marked on transfer, not on advice. Nobody expects you to know why the super guarantee is twelve percent or how a minimum employment period interacts with a dismissal claim. What you must do is carry the figure, the name of the scheme and the condition attached to it across without adding, dropping or softening anything.
- Should I say GST and BAS in English or find a Tamil equivalent?
- Keep them. ஜி.எஸ்.டி., பி.ஏ.எஸ்., பி.ஏ.ஒய்.ஜி. and ஏ.டி.ஓ. are what Tamil speakers in Australia actually say, and they are written in Tamil so the letters are read out one by one. Inventing a pure-Tamil translation sounds unnatural and risks pointing at the wrong scheme, which is a distortion rather than a stylistic choice.
- Which business dialogue should I practise first?
- Start with the hiring dialogue worked on this page — it is intermediate, and it teaches the shape of the whole topic: a named scheme, a number attached to it, a two-part question from the owner. Then move to the GST and lease dialogues, which are advanced and add acronym density and money arithmetic on top of that same shape.
- How many marks is a business dialogue worth?
- 45, the same as any other dialogue, out of 90 for the paper. You need 63 overall and at least 29 on each dialogue, so a business dialogue you find dry cannot be carried by a medical one you find easy. Practising the topic you would rather avoid is what moves your total.
