Australia PR Points Calculator

Run yourself through the points test for the subclass 189, 190 and 491 — every factor, in the order Schedule 6D lists them. The floor for lodging an Expression of Interest is 65 points. Your total moves as you answer, and the address bar carries your answers, so the result is easy to pass on.

We did not set any of these numbers. They come from Schedule 6D of the Migration Regulations 1994, which can be amended by legislative instrument at any time and without warning. Each row here was copied across on 15 September 2026 from compilation F2026C00667 (in force 1 July 2026). Before you act on a figure, check it against the Department’s points table or the regulations themselves. This is a planning tool, not migration advice, and we are not registered migration agents.

A nomination is worth points in its own right, so the same person scores differently on each.

How the points test actually works

The test adds up, and most of it is mechanical. Points come from your age, your English, your skilled work history, your highest qualification and a short list of Australia-specific extras; a nomination, if you have one, sits on top of all that. Clear 65 and you can lodge an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect.

Two details cause more confusion than everything else put together. One: the score is read on the day you are invited, not the day you lodge, so anything that expires or ticks over in between changes it. Two: work experience gained overseas and work experience gained in Australia are summed and then capped at 20 points, which is why an extra year abroad quite often adds nothing whatsoever.

Why 65 is a floor, not a target

Reaching 65 puts your EOI in the pool. It does not put you in front of a case officer. Rounds work downwards from the highest scorer in each occupation, so where demand is heavy the real cut-off can sit ten or twenty points above the minimum, and an EOI parked on exactly 65 can sit there for years without being reached. Read 65as “allowed to apply” rather than “in with a chance”. If that is where you have landed, how the three visa subclasses differ is the sensible next read.

The cheapest points on the board

Nearly every way of adding points is slow, costly, or both. Another year of skilled employment costs you a year. A doctorate costs several. Sitting an English test again to reach a higher tier costs money each time, and for plenty of capable people the extra band simply never arrives.

Community language points break that pattern, which is the honest reason this site is here. One test, one result, 5 points — and if Tamil is already a language you use, the work in front of you is learning an exam format rather than learning a language. That is a genuinely different kind of task from the other rows in the table; the full case for the five points sets out where it sits against the alternatives. It is not free money: you still have to pass, and a second attempt is charged at the full fee again.

What this tool will not tell you

Whether your occupation appears on the list that matters for your visa. Whether a skills assessment will come back positive. Whether an assessing authority will treat your last job as “closely related”. Whether any state will choose to nominate you. Those four questions decide most real cases, and every one of them is a judgement made by an assessing authority, a state government or the Department — never by a sum. A registered migration agent is the right person to take them to.

Frequently asked questions

How many points do I need for Australian PR?+

65 is the number that lets you lodge an Expression of Interest for a subclass 189, 190 or 491. Think of it as the door to the pool rather than the door to the visa: invitations are handed out from the top of each occupation downwards, so the score that actually gets picked up is often a good deal higher, and it shifts from round to round.

Is this points calculator accurate?+

Every factor is scored the way Schedule 6D of the Migration Regulations 1994 words it, row by row, transcribed on 15 September 2026 from compilation F2026C00667 (in force 1 July 2026). What a calculator cannot settle is the facts you feed it — whether an assessing authority will accept your qualification, or whether a particular job counts as "closely related" work. Those are somebody's judgement, not arithmetic.

Do the 189, 190 and 491 use the same points test?+

One table, three totals. The factors are identical, but a nomination scores in its own right: 5 points for a state or territory nomination on a 190, and 15 for a regional nomination or an eligible family sponsorship on a 491. That is why the first thing this calculator asks is which visa you are scoring for.

How does the NAATI CCL add 5 points?+

The credentialled community language row of the points table — item 6D91 — is worth 5 points, and the NAATI CCL is the usual way that credential gets earned. Pass it once and the points stay with you. Flip the toggle in the calculator to see what it does to your own number.

Does my age at lodgement or at invitation count?+

Your age on the day you are invited is the one that counts, and this catches people out. The bands step down at 33, 40 and 45, so a birthday that falls between lodging your EOI and receiving an invitation can quietly take 5, 10 or 15 points off the score you thought you had.

Is this an official Home Affairs calculator?+

No. NAATI Tamil is an independent study site with no connection to the Department of Home Affairs or to NAATI. This page simply renders the published table. The Department publishes its own calculator, and SkillSelect is the only system where an EOI actually exists.
